My first auction experience was bittersweet. My parents had an auction to sell items from my grandparents house after they died. At the time I was eight years old so I was seeing the auction through different eyes. It was exciting and fun. All I could see was treasures. I remember pleading with my dad to let me buy a crystal radio set. It was so cool and led me to have a career in telecommunications.
Of course, we had a real auctioneer and I was amazed at how fast he could talk and how quickly items would sell. The sale was out in the country in Illinois and people from all around attended. At the time it was a big deal. People got a lot good bargains. I miss going there for a week or two and listening to my grandfather play the fiddle and we also listened to the Grand Old Opry on the radio. My grandmother could cook the best food on a cob stove. Really, they used corn cobs for the stove and it was incredible what she could cook and bake.
That auction was fifty years ago but it made a great impression upon me. The auction seen has changed a lot since then and not only are there still physical auctions but now we all know Ebay and other auction sites. While Ebay is cool and easy, it lacks the atmosphere that is present at the physical auction. But, times change and we move forward. I hope you enjoyed my trip down memory lane.
